The Packers are making moves this summer to position themselves for a deep playoff run. The first major shake-up came when the team made the surprising decision to part ways with cornerback Jaire Alexander.
“Packers GM Brian Gutekunst met in person with CB Jaire Alexander on Sunday one last time, presumably giving him one last chance to restructure/reduce his contract and when he refused, Alexander was released from the team the next morning. Jaire has yet to comment this offseason,” wrote Packers reporter Mike Clemens.
While there are still question marks on defense, the wide receiver group is shaping up to be a dangerous one. Rookie Matthew Golden has already made an impression in limited practice time and is quickly becoming a fan favorite in Green Bay.
“Starting to realize Green Bay not too big, so a lot of people gonna recognize me. But it’s a blessing just to be able to be around people that care about you … for me it’s just being able to show my face and show that I love being here,” Golden said.
With Christian Watson making solid progress in his rehab, there could be roster pressure on newly signed veteran Mecole Hardman. Brian Sampson of Dairyland Express sees Hardman’s place on the team as uncertain.
“Now, none of this is to say Hardman won’t make the team or find a role. His playoff experience alone brings value to a young locker room, and the Packers aren’t going to lose sleep over a $1.5 million flyer. Still, the writing may already be on the wall. With a suddenly crowded receiver room and younger, more cost-controlled players on the rise, Hardman’s spot is far from guaranteed,” Sampson wrote.
Hardman does offer valuable postseason experience, but with the Packers confident in their current receiving core, his future in Green Bay may already be in jeopardy.
