Celtics two-way player JD Davison has been named the 2024-25 NBA G League Most Valuable Player after a standout season with the Maine Celtics. The point guard becomes the second Celtics player in the G-League to earn the award since 2014-15 MVP Tim Frazier.
The 22-year-old guard is in his third season with the Celtics as a two-way player and posted career-highs across 30 games in Maine. He averaged 25.1 points (4th in G League), 5.2 rebounds, 7.4 assists (7th in G League) and 1.5 steals per game while leading Maine to a playoff berth with a 21-14 record.
“His hard work and team-first attitude from day one with both the Boston and Maine Celtics have led to this achievement,” Brad Stevens said in a team release. “JD has embraced the idea of continuously improving, and we are thrilled for him.”
Stevens originally drafted Davison during the 2022 NBA Draft, selecting the 6-foot-1 guard with the No. 53 overall pick after a season at Alabama. Davison has spent the past three years as a two-way player splitting his team between Maine and Boston and holds the frahchise record for several catoriges including points, assists and steals. However, Davison will no longer be eligible to be a two-way player in Boston after this year, meaning he will have to be signed to the 15-man roster or join another team as a two-way player.
“JD has been nothing short of exceptional this season,” Maine Celtics coach Tyler Lashbrook said in a release. “His work ethic and commitment to his own development are second to none, but his leadership and the guidance he provides to our locker room are what sets him apart. Winning the NBA G League MVP is a testament to all of those qualities. He truly impacts winning in every way, and we’re very proud of him.”
Davison led the Maine Celtics to a playoff win on Tuesday night over the Capital City Go-Go and will be back in action on Thursday night when Maine faced off against the Westchester Knicks in the second round matchup.
