For better or worse, The Bold and the Beautiful never leaves us wondering what’s coming, it always telegraphs it a mile away. Take, for instance, what’s next for Liam and Hope. Just as he was flatlining at the hospital, his former wife was admitting to dad Deacon that the end of their marriage seemed to mark a disastrous turning point in her life. What does it mean? Well, duh. They are headed for another storyline together.
But it doesn’t have to be a redo of “Lope’s” tumultuous past. Hope, having taken stock since she threw over Carter and lost her fashion line (again), could have actually learned from her mistakes. Liam already seemed to have done that, having navel-gazed enough to realize that “Mr. Waffle Man,” as his father calls him, isn’t the kind of guy that he’d ever want to have anything to do with his own daughter. So this time could be, knock wood, different.
At least it could start out that way. Because the show has also been heavily telegraphing Steffy’s continued care and respect for Liam — as well as foreshadowing the end of her marriage to Finn. Much like he was suckered by Sheila’s pleas to get to know him as his biological mother™, he’s sure to get played by Luna and her teary-eyed pouty face. When that happens, Steffy is sure to resume leaning on Liam, and we’ll find out whether he and Hope really have learned from their pasts. Will Mr. Waffle Man squash Steffy’s efforts to reunite like a pancake? Or will he and the soap lead us down the path to another Hope/Liam/Steffy go-round? (As it is, another three characters seem poised to play that story.)
Personally, I’m hoping that the characters are allowed some growth. But that may be asking a lot of a show that has had Hope forget that she’s rich and even consider slumming it in a room above Dad’s pizzeria.
