Blockbuster Trade Pitch Nets Bears 2,300-Yard RB in Contract Year
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson built a highly-successful running back tandem with the Detroit Lions over the last few seasons, which several analysts have suggested he will eventually try to replicate in the Windy City.
The Bears made so many upgrades to the roster over the offseason, particularly on offense, the fact that they didn’t add a complementary running back alongside 2024 starter D’Andre Swift stood out — especially considering Johnson was part of the group that traded Swift from the Lions to the Philadelphia Eagles two years ago to make way for the Jahmyr Gibbs–David Montgomery duo in Detroit.
Chicago was in the mix for former Cleveland Browns rusher Nick Chubb before he inked a one-year deal with the Houston Texans last week. The Bears’ current situation in the running back room renders them among the franchises most likely to be interested in dealing for a backfield talent, either this summer or ahead of the NFL’s mid-season trade deadline.
One potential option is Breece Hall of the New York Jets, who ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported could end up on the trade block in the coming months based on how the Jets’ season unfolds.
“Hall’s name surfaced in trade rumors around the draft. It got so loud that [Jets head coach Aaron] Glenn called Hall to put his mind at ease,” Cimini wrote on Sunday, June 15. “The Jets want to be a run-oriented offense, so it wouldn’t have made sense to trade their most accomplished back. It could be a different story around the mid-season trading deadline. If they fall out of contention, Hall will be a prime candidate to be dealt.”
Breece Hall Still Pursuing Breakout NFL Season
Hall, a second-round pick in the 2022 draft (No. 36 overall), is entering the final season of his four-year rookie contract worth $9 million total. His current market value is $28 million over the course of a new four-year deal, according to Spotrac, though Hall can up that value during the 2025 campaign.
He burst onto the scene as a rookie three years ago, amassing nearly 700 yards from scrimmage and five total TDs through seven games played (two starts). Hall was beginning to get fringe MVP buzz before he suffered an ACL tear against the Denver Broncos in October of that season, which knocked him out for the remainder of the campaign.
Hall, now 24 years old, has tallied 2,333 rushing yards and 14 TDs on the ground as well as 152 receptions for 1,292 receiving yards and eight TDs through the air across his first three NFL seasons.
D’Andre Swift Regressed in Chicago After Pro Bowl Season With Eagles
Swift signed a three-year, $24 million contract with the Bears last offseason. And while he didn’t play poorly, Swift definitely took a step back in Chicago after posting his first Pro Bowl campaign with the Eagles the year prior.
The 26-year-old put up 1,345 yards from scrimmage and six total TDs in Chicago in 2024, though he managed just 3.8 yards per carry — a career low — on 253 attempts.
Third-year running back Roschon Johnson currently occupies the second-string spot on the Bears’ roster, though his production has been spotty over his first two professional seasons. Johnson has also battled multiple concussions early in his career.
