Blockbuster 3-Team Trade Proposal Poses Major Risk for Bears

The Chicago Bears are no strangers to making trades, but Bleacher Report proposed a blockbuster three-team trade that will put the team out of its comfort zone:

Bears trade

  • Dolphins receive: CB Greg Newsome II
  • Bears receive: CB Jalen Ramsey
  • Browns receive: OT Braxton Jones

On the surface, it’s fun to get creative and create trade proposals involving multiple teams, but would this specific trade make sense for the Bears?

Why This Bears’ Trade Poses a Major Risk

Braxton Jones

The Bears have spent the past few seasons rebuilding their roster with calculated, forward-thinking moves (even with some trades not working out). To make matters short, trading away Jones for Ramsey doesn’t make much sense. The former All-Pro and Pro Bowl cornerback is 30 years old and would be in a loaded cornerback room in Chicago with Jaylon Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson, Kyler Gordon, and Terell Smith, to name a few.

Ramsey is still a high-level talent when healthy, but the hefty contract and the reported interest in playing on the West Coast don’t align with the Bears.

The bigger problem is trading away Jones. He’s been a dependable starter for the Bears, who has started 40 games since being drafted in the fifth round back in 2022. While Jones did suffer a season-ending broken ankle last season, it’s a gamble to let 2025 second-round pick Ozzy Trapilo or 2024 third-round pick Kiran Amegadije man down Caleb Williams’ blind side with virtually no experience in the NFL.

Continuity and protection up front have been a crucial focal point this offseason, and swapping a key offensive lineman for an aging corner could easily backfire for the Bears.

Outlook for Browns and Dolphins

Greg Newsome

At first glance, the Browns’ receiving Braxton Jones might appear to fill a need. Their offensive line regressed in 2024, and they could use some depth behind Dawand Jones. But trading away a young stud in Newsome is steep for a team looking to get younger on defense.

Newsome, 25, has played an important role in Cleveland’s secondary since being drafted in the first round back in 2021. While he’s been primarily in the slot, he’s capable of lining up outside, which gives the Browns flexibility in coverage packages.

The only real winner of this trade would be the Dolphins. It feels like the book has closed for Ramsey to be with the team next season, and dumping his massive contract for a younger talent would be a win-win for the team. Newsome’s versatility gives Miami’s defense much-needed flexibility in the secondary.

Bleacher Report’s proposed deal is certainly intriguing and creative. But for the Bears and Browns, the cost is too high for what they’d gain. Chicago would be jeopardizing their offensive line and long-term stability for a short-term splash, while Cleveland would weaken its defense for a likely backup at left tackle.
