Fans are reaching the slowest part of the year, where teams finish up their offseason workouts and have over a month of relaxation before training camp in July. That means opinion and speculation articles are released in stacks with overreactions to what could happen.
For the Philadelphia Eagles, a topic that has been easy to target is the questions surrounding the offense. No, it isn't because of the players, as the unit is among the most talented in the league. It's more about the new offensive coordinator, Kevin Patullo.
Bleacher Report writer Moe Moton shared each Super Bowl contender's one roster flaw that could derail the whole season. Moton believes Patullo could cause some damage to the Eagles' Super Bowl repeat dreams.
He began with the history of when former offensive coordinator Shane Steichen left for the Indianapolis Colts' head coach position and Brian Johnson took over, resulting in disastrous outcomes. Hurts regressed to a career-high 15 interceptions, and the team lost six of their last seven games, including a 32-9 blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card game.
Moton is concerned that it could be the same situation with Patullo being like Johnson, a first-time play caller taking over Kellen Moore who departed to be the New Orleans Saints head coach.
Like Johnson in 2023, Patullo will call plays for the first time in his NFL career. Perhaps his experience as a passing game coordinator bodes well for the Eagles' aerial attack, but he must be able to set the game flow and make critical decisions as the offensive coordinator.
The Eagles defense should remain stout with Vic Fangio still in place, but one has to wonder if Patullo can optimize the talent on the offensive side of the ball."
What's different about Patullo compared to Johnson?
For one, Patullo has been heavily involved in the offensive game planning over the years since he has been the right-hand man of Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni. Johnson wasn't nearly as involved as the quarterback coach.
This offense is also set up with more success than what Johnson had in 2023, which might be a bit of a stretch. The key difference? Patullo has Saquon Barkley in the backfield to give it to which helps.
Patullo may not have to worry as much about scoring nearly 30 points a game with the defense Philadelphia has. Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio had the number one unit a year ago and most likely won't see too many steps back this year.
Many are still concerned about the damage Johnson caused to the Eagles' offense with his frequent use of bubble screens and ineffectiveness in understanding the game's flow. Patullo won't make the same mistakes as he has been set up for this moment since joining the team.
