NFL owners voted against banning the Tush Push on Wednesday, giving the Green Bay Packers another loss in 2025.
The move to ban the Tush Push was a proposal submitted by the Packers, and while there was speculation that the proposal would pass, the votes weren't there. 24 votes were needed for the NFL to pass a rule that would ban the Tush Push play perfected by the Philadelphia Eagles. After the vote on Wednesday, only 22 teams voted to pass the ban.
Adam Schefter of ESPN shared the list of 10 teams who were against the ban.
You will see that the Bears were not among the teams to vote against the Tush Push ban. The move shouldn't come as a surprise as George McCaskey hasn't been shy about the team's stance in recent comments.
“I know they say that we don’t have sufficient injury data on it, but, to us, it appears to be an inherently unsafe play,” McCaskey told reporters at the NFL Owners' Meetings in April. “I had the opportunity during committee meetings here earlier in the month to sit in the back of the room for the health and safety meeting with Allen Sills and Dr. John York, and they expressed concerns about the safety of everybody involved in that play.”
For someone who hates the Packers as much as any Bears fan, McCaskey is aligned with the Bears' hated rival on this proposal. And honestly, this once again appears to be a situation where McCaskey isn't up with the times of a modern NFL team. To be fair to McCaskey, as the Eagles were perfecting the play over the last three years, the team had a head coach in Matt Eberflus who wasn't up with the times either.
With Ben Johnson's arrival as the Bears' head coach, one would think that the Bears would want to keep the Tush Play in effect. After all, Johnson's former team, the Detroit Lions, is embracing the fact that the play remains in effect.
