Bills' Spending Spree Labeled Best Decision of Offseason

The Bills' front office re-signed a handful of home-grown stars to new contracts. Most notably, star quarterback and league MVP Josh Allen inked a six-year, $258 million extension with a $150 million guaranteed - the most guaranteed money in NFL history.

Other big contributors like receiver Khalil Shakir, edge rusher Greg Rousseau, cornerback Christian Benford and linebacker Terrel Bernard each got large four-year deals as well.

There is still one major contract left to go, with starting running back James Cook still disgruntled with the team's management of his extension eligibility. However, Sports Illustrated still named this Bills spending spree among the best decisions of any team this offseason.

"So often, teams that get close to a ring but fail for a few years decide to make drastic changes to both the coaching staff and the roster. In Buffalo’s case, the Bills decided to double down on the current group," Matt Verderme wrote.

The quartet of re-signees - excluding Allen - does not have a single Pro Bowl nod, but each player is a rising star at their position. Not only does Buffalo keep their young core together, but they also sign each on relatively team-friendly deals compared to their anticipated value down the line.

"The only remaining question in this realm is running back James Cook, who has a year left on his rookie deal," Verderame continued. "Cook led the league with 16 rushing touchdowns in 2024 but is still slated for free agency. If Cook re-signs at some point, that’s another home run for Beane and the Bills."

Of course, having been on the doorstep of a breakthrough for the past few years, the goal is for this year's roster to finally summit the AFC mountain and reach the Super Bowl.

But if the Bills come up short again in 2025, they can be comfortable that the work done this offseason will maintain a contending roster for years to come.

Once those Super Bowl dreams become a reality, it will be money well spent.
