Bills Report Card On Joey Bosa Signing 'Disappoints'

One of the Buffalo Bills' areas of need this offseason was to get more pass rush help, specifically someone who could get the defense off the field on third down.

Gregory Rousseau, A.J. Epenesa, and Von Miller were the Bills' top three sack-getters in 2024, and with Miller being released, a spot had opened up.

Enter Joey Bosa, who was released from the Los Angeles Chargers. The Bills signed Bosa to a one-year, $12.6 million deal to bring much-needed juice to a defensive line that was begging for it.

On face value, it seems like a good deal for the Bills, who aren't on the hook for much in 2025, and Bosa is in need of a career change after being stagnant in Los Angeles.

ESPN's Seth Walder has graded Buffalo's signing of Bosa and given it a B.

"In signing the 29-year-old Bosa, the Bills are hoping to fight against two separate and powerful forces -- injury risk and decline," Walder writes. "The median outcome is that Bosa disappoints and can't really help Buffalo. But the chances he turns in a big season are a lot higher than, say, Azeez Ojulari doing the same -- right? I think it's a gamble worth making given the one-year nature of the deal and the price."

Due to injuries, Bosa hasn't played a full season since 2021, and last year (14 games) was his best return in three seasons.

He still managed five sacks, 13 quarterback hits, and five tackles for loss, and his presence should mean that others like Rousseau and Epenesa could thrive.

Is this the move that will help Buffalo can over its playoff hump? Possibly, and in truth, Bosa will need to return to somewhere like his 2021 form for the Bills to see a big chance defensively.

Either way, it is a solid move with a lot of upside, and if it doesn't work, the Bills will only have him for one season and will try again next offseason.
