Bills Player Who Nobody Expected to Step Up is Doing Just That

It’s that exciting time when the players are back in town and the Buffalo Bills are officially in the midst of training camp, getting ready for the 2025-26 season. While many eyes are on players such as quarterback Josh Allen, training camp is a great chance to look at some of the players who don’t have the big names and see how they’re progressing.

Buffalo Bills on the field.

That’s one of the fun things about training camp: Everyone gets to be on the field, and everyone gets their moment in the spotlight. It’s also that time when players can prove their worth.

One player on the Bills’ squad is really stepping up during training camp, and hardly anyone has taken notice until now. The Bills made a smart move by resigning this player in 2024, and now, he’s really progressing into a solid lock in his position.

Buffalo Bills Safety is Showing His Stuff

We’re talking about Buffalo Bills safety Taylor Rapp. According to Jay Skurski, Rapp made an impressive three interceptions during the Bills’ practice this week. “Taylor Rapp has three interceptions today for the defense. He’s having a nice practice,” he said on X.

Rapp signed with the Bills in 2023 to a one-year deal, and the team extended his contract in 2024 with a three-year deal. Good for Rapp to have such a strong camp, and it shows that there’s no reason for him to not be a starter next season. Rapp’s first year starting with the Bills brought 82 total tackles, two interceptions and six pass deflections.

“Rapp should be the team’s No. 1 safety heading into the season and the Bills will need a big season out of him to make sure that the secondary doesn’t become a liability,” Brandon Ray of Buffalo Lowdown notes in a feature published on Friday, July 25. “With a revamp in the secondary, we could very well see Rapp playing a little bit more of a versatile role rather than just at safety.”

Taylor Rapp of the Bills Will Have to Perform

As Ray notes, it will be important for Rapp to have a solid season, because when it comes to the Bills’ lineup, the safety position is seen as one of the weakest in their roster.

“The one position for the Buffalo Bills that has been pinned as the weakest point on the roster is safety,” Ray stated. “It seems like without Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer in the secondary, analysts and fans are saying that Buffalo’s safety room is going to be a liability.”

It’s worth noting that the PFF didn’t list Ray or any Bills safety in their top 32. In a June 4 piece, Zoltán Buday named Kyle Hamilton of the Ravens the No. 1 safety in the league. “Hamilton showed off his versatility in 2024, moving to free safety for most of the second half of the season after playing mainly in the box or as a slot cornerback initially,” Ray said. He added that Hamilton “was also the most complete safety in the league as the only player at the position to earn at least an 88.0 PFF grade in coverage, run defense and pass rushing.”

So, it would be great to see Rapp show his stuff during the 2025-26 season and prove these best-of tallies wrong.
