The Buffalo Bills have spent the offseason re-signing core players to long-term contract extensions. None of them compare to the one they handed out on Sunday night.
Not in terms of money, and certainly not in terms of importance.
The Bills re-signed starting quarterback and reigning league MVP Josh Allen to a new six-year, $330M contract extension that includes $250M in guaranteed money.
It is the largest contract in NFL history, and it comes when Allen still has four years remaining on his current deal.
It ties Allen to the Bills through the 2030 season.
Along with Allen, the Bills have also re-signed wide receiver Khalil Shakir, linebacker Terrell Bernard and defensive lineman Gregory Rosseau.
They also released Von Miller on Sunday morning.
Those are all significant moves, but keeping Allen in Buffalo — and keeping him happy — tops all of that. The quarterback is the position that drives every NFL franchise, and Allen is one of the very best in the league right now.
Allen's combination of size, top-tier arm, ability to run and toughness makes him one of the most complete quarterbacks in the NFL, and a perfect fit for the harsh weather conditions that Buffalo often has to play in later in the season.
The 2024 season may not have been his best statistical season, but it was some of the most efficient and mistake-free football that he has ever played in the NFL, while he helped carry a flawed team that had some weaknesses (including the lack of a go-to wide receiver) to the AFC Championship game.
The Bills are still looking to break through and get back to their first Super Bowl since the 1993 season and for the first time with Allen. As long as he is healthy and on the team they are going to have a chance to compete for it.
