Bills Get Bad News on Favorite Target for Josh Allen

The Buffalo Bills took a big hit to their offense the day before training camp opened, placing one of quarterback Josh Allen’s favorite targets on the non-football injured list.

Dawson Knox

The team announced on July 22 that tight end Dawson Knox was injured and not available for the start of training camp on Wednesday. The veteran tight end has been a steady presence for the Bills and expected to pair with Dalton Kincaid to form a strong pass-catching duo from the tight end position.

Bills Gave No Details on Dawson Knox’s Ailment

The Bills did not give any specifics on why Knox was added to the list, but SI.com’s Ronnie Eastham noted that his injury is not expected to be significant.

“The veteran starter will not be available for practice yet as he was added to the Non-Football Injury list,” Eastham wrote. “We don’t have updates as to the particulars of the injury, or how long he might be out. Typically, however, active PUP designations signal a minor injury.”

Though the 28-year-old tight end has seen a dip in production over the last two seasons, he remains a significant part of Buffalo’s offense and has often been a favorite target for Allen in key moments.

Knox made 22 receptions for 311 yards and one touchdown last season. Since joining the team in 2019, the veteran tight end has 193 receptions for 2,277 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Knox has struggled with a series of injuries in recent years, but his health could be important for the team in 2025. The Bills parted ways with both of their top receivers — Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis — before the start of last season and instead adopted an “everybody eats” approach of spreading out the ball more evenly to a wider group of pass-catchers.

Though Knox fell behind Kincaid on the tight end depth chart, he is still an important part of the offense and could be a key contributor this season.

Bills Add Two More Weapons for Josh Allen

The Bills made some new additions before the start of training camp as well, signing wide receiver David White Jr. and tight end Matt Sokol after they had workouts with the team.

As the Bills noted, White spent the 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars but was sidelined by a torn ACL that he suffered in June. He was released last month and impressed the team’s coaches enough at this week’s workout to earn a contract.

“White originally joined Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent out of Western Carolina in 2024,” the team noted in its announcement of his signing. “In two seasons with Western Carolina, White caught 54 passes for 903 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.”

Sokol could provide some depth at tight end if Knox misses any significant time. As the team noted, Sokol has bounced around the league and seen some NFL action during his career.

“Sokol spent the 2024 season on Pittsburgh’s practice squad,” the team noted. “He has played in eight career games from 2020-2023. Since 2019, the tight end has played on five different NFL teams (Chargers, Jaguars, Lions, Patriots, Steelers).”
