Kansas City Chiefs CEO and Chairman Clark Hunt announced that the team will induct Bill Maas as its 50th player and 54th individual into the Chiefs Hall of Fame and Ring of Honor during the 2025 NFL season.
The former No. 5 overall pick in the 1984 NFL Draft out of the University of Pittsburgh, Maas played nine seasons in Kansas City and 10 in the NFL. Upon joining the Chiefs, he made his mark immediately, becoming the first player in franchise history to earn NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Maas ranks 14th on the franchise sack leaderboard with 40 career sacks playing the nose tackle position. He was known for his relentlessness as a pass-rusher and his ability to take on double and triple teams in the trenches.
"Bill embodied toughness and grit," Hunt said. "He was a great teammate, and it's clear since his playing days have been over, that he has remained a great teammate for the city of Kansas City. He's remained involved in the game through his broadcasting career, and he's remained involved in the Kansas City community as a Chiefs ambassador. Bill was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2017, and we are thrilled to be able to induct him into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame at Legends weekend this fall."
Maas was part of the 1991 team under Marty Schottenheimer, which broke the playoff win drought that had plagued the team since Super Bowl IV. Speaking to reporters, he explained what this moment means to him.
"Yeah, I mean, it's kind of stamp of approval, if you will, for the efforts you put into it," Maas told reporters. "I was talking to somebody today, and you know when Lombardi said, 'Football isn't just a game, it's a way of life.' It was a way of life for me. I moved here in 1984 when I got drafted here to become a Chief and made home here, stayed here. And so being a part of this and being a part of the Chiefs family forever, it's got to be right up there at the top of the list. I told Clark, I think last night I told him, I said that the two greatest phone calls I got were in 1984 from his father, and then the phone call I got from him earlier this month, and means a ton to me."
There is no official date for the enshrinement ceremony into the Chiefs Hall of Fame, but it will be held whenever the Chiefs host their annual "Legends Weekend." Last season, Tamba Hali was inducted during the team's Week 14 game against the Los Angeles Chargers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
