Bill Belichick suggests wild change for the NFL to honor Tom Brady's legacy

The first trophy to the winner of a game between the NFL and the AFL champions was awarded in 1967, when the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs. In 1970, it was renamed to Vince Lombardi Trophy, after the former Packers head coach passed away. Now, 55 years later, Bill Belichick has an idea.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (12) celebrates with coach Bill Belichick after the AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. The Patriots defeated the Chiefs 37-31 in overtime to advance to fifth Super Bowl in eight seasons.

"Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy, he won seven of them," the former New England Patriots and current UNC head coach said during the show "Let's Go! with Bill Belichick, Maxx Crosby, Peter King, and Jim Gray", on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Context

During the talk, Bill Belichick said that players are the ones who really deserve praise, because they are ultimately responsible for winning the games.

"Players win games, you can't win games without good players. I don't care who the coach is. It's impossible, you can't win without good players," Belichick said. "I found out when I had Taylor Banks, and Harry Carson, Pepper Johnson, Jim Burt, Everson Walls, all those guys. The Giants, same thing. When we got good at Cleveland, and then at New England, I mean, it's Brady, it's McGinest, it's Vrabel, it's Bruschi, it's Corey Dillon, it's Randy Moss, Troy Brown, Lawyer Milloy, Ty Law, Rodney Harrison. Those are the guys that won the games. I didn't make any tackles, I didn't make any kicks, that was Vinatieri that made that kick in four inches of snow."

Obviously, Belichick knows his role in the Patriots dynasty. But that was more related to finding great players and putting them in position to be successful.

"You gotta have good players. And as a coach, you wanna give your players a chance to win," Belichick added. "You wanna put them in a position where if they go out there and play well, they'll have a chance to win. That's what Coach Parcells taught me, is there's always a way to win, you just gotta figure out what it is. And you have to give the players a chance."

Bill Belichick spent almost 50 years as an NFL coach, including two stints as a head coach—with the Cleveland Browns (1991-1995) and New England Patriots (2000-2023). In total, he won eight Super Bowls—six as the Patriots head coach and two as the New York Giants defensive coordinator.

This year, at North Carolina, he will start his first stint as a college coach.
