Bears Veteran Responds to Ben Johnson’s Decision to Kick Starting Offense Off Field

Well, the start of training camp hasn’t exactly been ideal for the Chicago Bears. They had to understand, upon entering camp, that things would be much different due to Ben Johnson. Johnson is a new head coach, looking to change a storied franchise.

Ben Johnson, Chicago Bears

While the Bears haven’t performed as well as many had hoped over the past few decades, this franchise is expected to win. The Bears have to be better than they’ve been, starting at the top with Johnson.

There were some issues on the first day of training camp, and according to reports, Johnson pulled the first team offense off the field. Per the media in attendance, Johnson pulled Caleb Williams and the rest of the starting offense off the field during seven-on-sevens because they weren’t lined up correctly.

“You’re out,” Johnson said, per Cassie Carlson of FOX 32.

Ben Johnson brings a different culture to the Bears

Perhaps this could’ve ruffled some feathers for Chicago Bears players, as these are grown men. They likely haven’t been coached like this before, unless they played for other teams, as many have questioned whether the Bears were getting coached properly over the past few years.

When discussing the situation, veteran Cole Kmet acknowledged that things will be different. Still, if a player isn’t meeting Johnson’s expectations, they must understand that there will be consequences.

“If you’re not doing it right, he’s gonna get you out and he’s not going to (let) that stuff continue,” Kmet said, per The Athletic. “It’s just a lesson to us that you got to be on the details. We got to be on the details going into practice and we’re going to get our reps in.”

Bears expect to improve under Ben Johnson

Kmet later added that nothing that any Chicago Bears player does goes unnoticed.

While this might be frustrating at times, it’s ultimately an excellent sign that the Bears are in a significantly different position than they’ve been over the past few years.

Unfortunately, things went the way they did over the past few seasons, but the Bears now have an opportunity to improve heavily under Johnson, and it sounds like Kmet expects that to be the case.

“No detail goes unnoticed,” Kmet said. “You may catch a ball, and it might be a big play in practice, but he’s harping on the detail of your alignment is off or your steps are off here, and even though we got the result right, we didn’t do it the right way at times.

“Those are the details you need to hear, and you can’t be result-driven all the time, especially this time of the year in training camp. You’ve really got to be detail-driven, and Ben is all about the details, and you feel that in every meeting.”

It’ll take plenty more work for the Bears to be the team they want to be in the near future, but this is a step in the right direction and should make all fans excited about what could come.
