The Chicago Bears’ special teams unit was under the microscope for the second consecutive week after their Week 11 debacle against the Green Bay Packers.
In last week’s overtime loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Bears kicker Cairo Santos had his field goal blocked from 48 yards out in the first half, which angered fans. If you remember, Santos had his game-winning field goal attempt blocked in Week 11 against the Packers.
However, Santos redeemed himself later in the game, executing an onside kick with 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and then hitting the game-tying field goal from 48 yards.
On Tuesday, Bears special teams coordinator Richard Hightower threw his support behind his veteran kicker, who has been unlucky over the past couple of weeks.
According to the 79th and Halas Podcast, Hightower said he wouldn’t want anyone else but Cairo Santos kicking for them. The special teams coordinator also called Santos a “warrior and fighter.”
Despite the two blocked field goals, which ultimately fall on a lack of execution, Santos has done his job this season. The 33-year-old kicker has made 16-of-20 field goals (80 percent) and 17-of-18 extra points (94.4 percent).
Santos has been phenomenal on field goals between 20-39 yards, as he’s a perfect 5-of-5. But he’s had trouble between 40-49 yards, making 4-of-7. However, when the Bears need Santos to make a 50-plus-yard field goal, he’s 7-of-8.
The only other kickers to make at least seven or more field goals from 50-plus yards out this season are Jason Sanders (Dolphins – 7), Cameron Dicker (Chargers – 7), Chris Boswell (Steelers – 9), Brandon Aubrey (Cowboys – 10), and Ka’imi Fairbairn (Texans – 12).
The Bears hope their special teams' woes are behind them as they can’t afford any slip-ups against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving.
