The Chicago Bears had their rookie minicamp this past weekend which gave us a first impression of their picks. They are very excited about their rookie class as a whole, but one guy stood out in particular through the weekend.
The offensive line has been completely overhauled this offseason by bringing in three new starters on the interior and potentially another one at one of the tackle spots. Braxton Jones is coming off of surgery and will miss majority of camp this summer so the left tackle spot is something the Bears need to figure out sooner rather than later.

“He’s super smart. We had a meeting last night and he was able to apply the concepts to the field immediately. He’s very advanced in that regard.”

Early reports are that Ozzy Trapilo is super intelligent and picking things up mentally very quickly. His size and length make him a very interesting puzzle piece for Ben Johnson's offense, but depending on a rookie left tackle can be risky as well. At the very least the Bears look to have a guy who is going to compete for a starting position and has the tools to earn it.
Clay Harbor even noted that the rookie moved with impressive athleticism for his size while maintaining the proper technique.

Trapilo was drafted in the second round, 56th overall by the Bears. The massive 6'8" enforcer out of Boston College has experience at both tackle spots and is much better in pass-protection than run blocking due to this large frame. Last season he earned All-ACC honors after starting 12 games at right tackle for the BC Eagles and was also second-team All-ACC in 2023 at the same position.
As mentioned earlier, we still do not know how quick Braxton Jones will return, so Trapilo can truly practice his way into the starting left tackle spot. Moving Darnell Wright over to the left side and having Trapilo slot in at right tackle has also been rumored, but that seems like a stretch as Wright has really shown growth at the right tackle spot and ideally you don't want to ruin that.
