Bears QB Caleb Williams Reveals What He Did Before Controversial Final Play

With time ticking off the clock late in his team's Thanksgiving showdown with the Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams knew he needed to make a quick change.

The Bears had nearly erased a 16-point deficit and were trailing by three points late in the fourth quarter. After driving into field-goal range, Williams took a second-down sack that left close to 30 seconds left on the clock. Rather than call timeout, the Bears hurried to the line and tried to run a play but took too long, leaving Williams with only a final desperate heave toward the endzone that fell incomplete.

Speaking to reporters after the 23-20 loss, Williams said coaches called in a play but by the time the offense lined up there were only 13 seconds left in the game. Williams knew that was not enough time to complete a pass to get into better field goal range before using the team's final timeout, so he called an audible to throw to the endzone instead.

"I ended up changing the play," Williams said, "because with the play we had, 13 seconds -- any play you have with 13 seconds with no time... Well, we had a timeout, but with that situation, 13 seconds, make a call and try and get it snapped and take a shot."

The decision not to call a timeout has drawn widespread criticism, especially toward head coach Matt Eberflus who had the opportunity to call a timeout as his team's offense was slow in getting back to the line and set.

Asked by reporters after the game whether he's fearful for his job security, Eberflus said he can't spend time worrying about it.

“I mean, this is the NFL,” he said, via the Chicago Tribune. “And I know where it is. I’m just going to put my best foot forward. And I’ll get to work and keep grinding.”
