Bears Predicted to Make ‘Controversial’ Cut in Favor of Veteran

The Chicago Bears are entering the 2025 season with renewed optimism and heightened expectations. After a franchise-altering 2024 draft that saw Caleb Williams selected No. 1 overall and the arrival of offensive guru Ben Johnson as head coach, all eyes are on how the team develops around its young quarterback. While much of the focus is rightfully on Williams and the weapons around him, an under-the-radar roster battle is brewing behind the scenes, and one that could see a fan favorite cut in favor of a veteran.

Tyson Bagent

A Controversial Cut Brewing in Chicago

One of the biggest surprises over the past two seasons was the emergence of quarterback Tyson Bagent, the undrafted player out of Division II Shepherd University. Bagent defied the odds in 2023 by making the Bears’ roster and even starting games in relief of Justin Fields. But according to Billy Heyen of Sporting News, Bagent may not make it to Week 1 this year. Instead, veteran Case Keenum is being positioned as the likely QB2 behind Williams, leaving Bagent as a potential roster cut.

“Chicago probably can’t pass up the chance for Keenum to be Williams’ backup, and that could leave Bagent as the odd man out,” Heyen wrote.

Bryan Perez of Chicago Bears on SI also believes Bagent could be a possible roster cut, stating, “He has no future as a starter with the Bears, and the QB2 role should be reserved for a veteran with experience who can help Williams develop.”

This seems like a controversial move, since Bagent has been one of the better backup quarterbacks in the NFL and one of the hardest workers this offseason. Not only that, but he’s been buying into what Johnson and the new coaching staff bring to this new-look Bears team.

“This staff is really like, looking at you in the face like ‘Hey be ready to roll,'” Bagent said. “We’re in the National Football League so that’s really, in my opinion, how it should be ran. I’m loving it so far.”

Can’t wait to see how Tyson Bagent is progressing under Ben Johnson. I was impressed by the increased poise and control he displayed in 2024. Am I crazy to think that this staff could help him develop into a something more than just a backup QB? #Bears

Why Moving on From Tyson Bagent Isn’t So Clear-Cut

Case Keenum

The real controversy here is whether Bagent’s upside should outweigh the short-term safety that Keenum provides. While Keenum is a much-needed veteran presence in the QB room, he’s a placeholder, not a long-term solution.

Bagent, on the other hand, is still developing and could provide valuable depth for years to come, either as a reliable backup or a potential trade chip down the line.

Still, Johnson and general manager Ryan Poles must make some tough decisions this offseason. But this shouldn’t be an issue in the first place. The Bears should roll with three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. Plain and simple.

Keenum and Bagent are valuable assets for the Bears and shouldn’t be cut in favor of the other player. If not, the Bears could be making a huge mistake letting Bagent go.
