The Chicago Bears have made big changes to their offense this offseason, but Ben Johnson could be looking for one final piece. The Bears could make a key selection for him on Day 1 of the NFL Draft.
With the Detroit Lions, Johnson had two great running backs, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. He has D'Andre Swift at his disposal, but could be targeting a playmaker to pair with him in the backfield. The Bears may not have the opportunity to select Ashton Jeanty, but they would not necessarily need the 10th overall pick to land the second-best running back in the draft, Omarion Hampton.
Pro Football Network's Cameron Sheath predicted the Bears would make this trade with the Miami Dolphins to gain draft capital while also staying in a position to draft Hampton:
- Bears receive: 13th, 98th, 135th and 224th overall picks
- Dolphins receive: 10th overall pick
Sheath predicted the Dolphins would select Armand Membou at No.10 after losing Terron Armstead. However, the Bears would be able to land an electric player for Johnson at No.13.
Sticking at No. 10 and taking Membou would have been an option, but a team plugging gaps in free agency often suggests they have other plans in the draft," wrote Sheath. "Therefore, I’m giving them Hampton here. After two years of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, I’m not sure that D’Andre Swift moves the needle for Ben Johnson. The Bears have a competitive defense when they’re all focusing on the play and not the opposition fans (still too soon?), so they can afford to splash out on offense."
Hampton ran for 1,660 yards last season and has led the conference in rushing yards in back-to-back seasons. He had over 2,000 scrimmage yards in 2024 and could be an explosive addition to the Bears. The Bears have already added Jonah Jackson, Joe Thuney and Drew Dalman this offseason. Moving back three spots, adding three picks and drafting Hampton would be a solid move.
