Bears lineman surprisingly called 'worst free agent signing' in team history

The Chicago Bears’ offense has fallen far short of expectations through three games, and the offensive line deserves a ton of blame.

Caleb Williams isn’t receiving the protection he needs to utilize the weapons around him. Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron isn’t asserting himself enough to keep everyone on the same page. The running game is in shambles.

The 'Mad Minute' on Rams-Bears in Week 4 'GMFB'

The "GMFB" hosts preview what to expect in the Week 4 matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and Chicago Bears.

Needless to say, Chicago has a lot to work through heading into Sunday’s battle at Soldier Field versus the Los Angeles Rams.

Who is most culpable for Chicago's ugly offense? It's difficult to pinpoint.

For one, the Bears’ O-line would be in much better shape right now if Nate Davis wasn’t a shell of who Chicago thought he’d be when they signed him.

Davis signed a handsome three-year, $30 million deal with the Bears in March 2023, but he’s struggled with injuries since then, missing six games last season and remaining unavailable for a ton of training camp this summer.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus — who champions availability above most attributes — has had enough of Davis.

Fans and media aren’t exactly inspired by Davis’s recent production, either.

Sports Mockery’s Erik Lambert suggested on Friday that Davis’s time in Chicago has been disappointing enough to label him the worst free agent signing in franchise history.

“Nate Davis is benched,” Lambert said. “There is no injury to hide behind. He practiced in full on Thursday and Friday. Under normal circumstances, he’d play. The fact he isn’t should tell you everything you need to know about what the Chicago Bears think of him.”

“Davis barely practiced in training camp. … His inability to stay on the field ruined their  (offensive line) plans.”

“Nate Davis is a harsh lesson for Ryan Poles. … He might have a case for the worst free agent signing in Bears history. … There is no way Davis sees the field again unless another injury occurs.”

Davis or no Davis, the Bears need to turn things around, and fast. They have way too many elite skill players on offense to be struggling so hard to score. Sunday will be a crucial day for the franchise.
