Since the beginning of the Chicago Bears' head coaching search, fans have been somewhat torn on how to feel about the process.
On one hand, it's exciting to know that candidates should want this job with players like Caleb Williams, Jaylon Johnson and D.J. Moore in place, among others. There's potential for this roster to become elite in a hurry.
But, there are also supposed concerns about how the Bears do business. Whether it's the perceived "meddling" of George McCaskey or questions about the relationship between Ryan Poles and Kevin Warren, there are reasons to believe why some candidates could be turned off by the Bears.
It appears all of those worries are to be put to bed, however.
In a spot on the "Spiegel and Holmes Show" on 670 The Score, Robert Mays of The Athletic had some eye-opening words in regards to how the Bears are viewed by potential head coaching candidates.
"Some of the outside dysfunction or incompetence that we've seen from the Bears ... I don't necessarily know if that's as much of a deterrent to the candidates for a job like this."
Mays went on to give us an inside scoop to a conversation he had with a coaching candidate the Bears are actually interviewing for this job:
"I talked to somebody who they actually are interviewing for the job and I asked him, point-blank, I was like, 'If the Bears were to interview you for the head coaching job, would you take it?' and he didn't even hesitate to say 'yes.'"
Once again, these are incredibly eye-opening words from Mays. By most accounts, we had been led to believe that the number one reason why a candidate wouldn't take the job is due to the organizational "dysfunction" with the likes of McCaskey and general manager Ryan Poles' shortcomings.
"He (Poles) is not actively somebody that's going to scare people off in the way Trent Baalke is," Mays went on to say.
Mays doubled-down on his take, noting that the McCaskeys aren't necessarily this big, bad monster they're made out to be.
"I don't think the McCaskeys are are people that are perceived of like Woody Johnson is, where they're 'boogeymen' for people who might take a job like this," he said.
Now, Bears fans will be the first to tell you that they tend to disagree with Mays on this notion. After all, this fan base has experienced failure and dysfunction to a point where it's become normal. The Bears being dysfunctional and doing things backwards has become no different than waking up in the morning.
If what Mays is saying is indeed true, then fans should have a whole lot more hope for this process going forward. If this holds true, then it's easy to see why the Bears' job would be the most coveted of them all, simply due to the pieces in place, starting with Caleb Williams.
This certainly offers even more hope for candidates like Ben Johnson and Mike Vrabel. Although the Bears are interviewing a laundry list of candidates, these two remain atop the list and should be the heavy favorites for the job.
