The Chicago Bears made a surprising pick when they got on the clock on Day 1 of the NFL Draft. They selected Colston Loveland, but they tried to move up in the order to potentially select a different player.
Bears general manager Ryan Poles revealed that the Bears explored moving up, but the price was too high for their liking.
"When we made those calls up, it took you out," Poles said in his post-draft press conference.
He felt making a trade, and overpaying for one player, would keep them from being part of a run of players where he felt they could benefit their football team.
"We made phone calls up and back just to kind of see what the landscape was. Did it make sense for us or not?" Poles noted. "At the end of the day, the way it fell, we felt really comfortable with how it worked out."
It's not surprising that the Bears selected a player on the offensive side of the football after hiring Ben Johnson in the offseason. With the Detroit Lions, Johnson had Sam LaPorta at his disposal. Loveland could become that type of player for the Bears. The Bears already have Cole Kmet, but the Bears could get a lot out of both players on the field together.
Loveland had 582 yards and five touchdowns last season, despite losing JJ McCarthy to the NFL. With Caleb Williams, Rome Odunze, D.J. Moore, D'Andre Swift and Kmet already in Chicago, Loveland could benefit from going under the radar in opposing game plans.
