The Chicago Bears made five selections on the offensive side of the ball in the NFL Draft. However, to the surprise of many did not select a running back early.
Going into the draft, there was plenty of buzz around the Bears drafting Ashton Jeanty, and even trading up to do so. However, they selected Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick. Ben Johnson relied heavily on a two-running back system with the Detroit Lions, and many thought the Bears would get a running mate for D'Andre Swift in the draft.
The Bears did not pick a running back until the seventh round when they selected Kyle Monangai from Rutgers University. Their draft strategy could indicate that Swift will carry the load in the running game, but there are still free agents the Bears could target. USA Today's Mike Pendleton listed Nick Chubb as a potential target for the Bears.
"Working his way back from another serious knee injury, Nick Chubb played limited time for the Cleveland Browns last season and has struggled to find a new team this offseason," wrote Pendleton. "He spent his first seven seasons in Cleveland, who addressed their running back position in the draft by adding Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson. Chubb is a power back who would work well in a smaller role alongside D'Andre Swift and serve as a mentor to Roschon Johnson."
Chubb is a four-time Pro Bowler, but has struggled with injuries the last two seasons. He is still not 30 years old and could be a high-upside addition for the Bears. Chubb made four consecutive Pro Bowls from 2019-2022 and posted a 1,500-yard rushing campaign the year prior to his devastating injury in 2023.
He could be highly motivated to show the world he can still play like he is the best running back in the league, and the Bears could give him that opportunity. Spotrac only projects him to sign a one-year, $3.2 million deal.
