The Chicago Bears are coming out of the bye week looking like a real complete team in all three facets of the game.
It was a slow start for the offense led by a rookie quarterback and a new offensive play-caller, but the unit started to find their groove over the last three games.
In the last two games specifically, the Bears managed to score 35 or more points and record over 370 yards of total offense in each game.
The unit has a lot of top weapons, which is another part of the reason why the group took a few games to get rolling. But, tight end Cole Kmet credits his rookie quarterback, Caleb Williams, for the offense's recent success.
"It’s hard not to say the quarterback," Kmet said on Monday while speaking with reporters. "The quarterback looks really good."
Williams has certainly been a bright spot for the offense, but overall the entire operation on that side of the ball has been much improved. The run game is becoming more effective, the skill players are building off each other, and the protection has been a lot better compared to the first few games of the season.
There's still some errors being overshadowed here and there, but the next step for the unit is keeping things consistent going into a tough stretch on the schedule.
"We still have a lot of work to do," Kmet added. "I think in the run game there's still things we need to clean up. Pass game wise, there's still a lot in our protection game, still things that we can be better at. I think you look at the film and there's actually some big mistakes that we need to correct that we know of. Once we go against these better teams in the NFL and we start vying to make a playoff push, we have to get those things dialed in."
With how good the unit looked on the field over the last two games, it was hard to notice any issues still lingering. And the reason why makes sense.
"I think what's overcome our mistakes that we've seen the last couple of weeks, that don't make it so glaring, is the talent that we do have," Kmet explained. "I think we're able to make up for it at times when we have a mistake. I think we have the guys now on both sides of offense and defense to make up for some of those mistakes. It's really cool to have but you don't want to live in that world consistently."
The Bears have a lot of high-end talent on that side of the ball and ironing out the remaining issues over the next few weeks will help prepare the unit for the tougher games coming up, such as the three game divisional stretch from Weeks 11-13.
However, the entire team seems to be confident in the growth and progression of their rookie quarterback as he leads the offense coming out of the bye week. Williams is shouldering a big role and so far has handled it in a big way.
