Bears' Caleb Williams facing a big change under new head coach Ben Johnson

Chicago is excited about Ben Johnson's arrival as new head coach.

The hope for the Bears is that the offensive mastermind can help Caleb Williams continue to grow as an NFL quarterback heading into his second season.

Johnson is planning on a change, though, that'll greatly impact Williams.

The Bears are expected to line Williams up under center much more than he did as a rookie.

The Lions under Johnson played 56.2 percent of their snaps under center in 2024. The Bears under Matt Eberflus went under center 26.4 percent of the time, according to Pro Football Network.

Johnson's offense includes brilliant play-action passes from under center that Jared Goff excelled at.

Williams will have to move out of his shotgun comfort zone more than he ever has in his football career.

“He’s been predominantly a shotgun quarterback for most of his high school and college career, and so he’s very comfortable there," Johnson said. "We’re going to work to see the comfort level under center and how much of that applies.”

Williams is clearly immensely talented, so if Johnson can find a way to mesh the skill set with his offensive ideology, it could be a great fit.
