The Las Vegas Raiders passed on a quarterback during this spring’s NFL Draft, in part in hopes that either Aidan O’Connell or journeyman Gardner Minshew.
Sure, it’s possible, even likely that Brock Bowers develops into the NFL’s next elite tight end after being chosen No. 13 overall. However, who winds up throwing to Bowers and veteran star wide receiver Davante Adams remains an open question.
And, if early training camp practices are any indication, head coach Antonio Pierce isn’t exactly impressed by what he’s seen, so far.
“I’d like to see — again, I’m gonna keep saying it — somebody to just take it and say, ‘I’m the guy, AP.’ Make it clear and evident,” Pierce said. “And then we’ll make that decision at that point.
“I think it’s difficult when we don’t have pads on. There are a lot of things, I’m sure you saw it looked like the defense was winning. But obviously, you hope that will stop now with pads on — a little more resistant. But it goes back to the No. 1 thing is taking care of the ball, putting the team in a position to win. Managing the offense, understanding the operational [elements]. You saw some situational stuff there yesterday. I think our guys are doing a good job. Both quarterbacks are really embracing it. But, again, I’ll just go back to it — somebody has to just separate from the other.”
As practices intensify and in preseason games, O’Connell and Minshew will have their opportunities to prove they have what it takes to be a competent NFL starter. But, if neither step up, it could prove difficult for the Raiders to compete in the AFC West.
