Antonio Pierce might be telling the truth. Even so, it's definitely an odd decision for a head coach to outright insult his team as a means of motivation.
Pierce is the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders these days, having had the "interim" title taken down after an inspired run of sorts at the end of last season. Popular with his defensive players, Pierce earned considerable internal support for the long-term demands of the job and so he was given the head coaching role this past offseason.
Approximately three-quarters into the next season and Pierce had some interesting words for his Raiders' players with the Kansas City Chiefs on the horizon for a Black Friday game.
"Let's call a spade a spade. The best team in football against the worst team in football. Let's change the narrative, right? Let's go out there and make it a dogfight. Let's make it ugly. Let's make it scrappy. It's Black Friday. Let's create a little chaos and get back to Raider football."
Pierce had us until that last part, although the first part was at least off-putting, right? Best team against the worst team in football? Is that really heartening to hear your head coach say you're the worst in the game?
Beyond that, however, Pierce also said the team needed to get back to "Raider football". We're not sure what decade he's living in but Raider football has meant living in or around the basement of the AFC West since the mid-'80s, save for a few random years here and there. As it stands, the Raiders are playing Raider football about as well as they can.
