The Minnesota Vikings clearly have a quarterback for the future.
They’re very high on J.J. McCarthy, which is why they made some tough decisions in the offseason.
However, they need to add a proven backup by his side.
Even if he’s good right out of the gate, he’s still coming off a season-ending knee injury, and you can never have too much depth at quarterback.
With that in mind, NFL analyst Ben Goessling believes that they could make a run at Carson Wentz.
That’s particularly true because of his ties to former teammate and current VIkings QB coach, Josh McCown:
“They have some familiarity with Wentz,” Goessling said. “They understand what makes him tick probably better than a lot of teams would, so that could be an option. Now you can feel good about him or you can feel not so good about him based on familiarity with him, but they will have enough to go off of based on McCown’s experience with him on top of everything else they may be able to get from it.”
This makes sense, especially considering the lack of proven options right now.
The Vikings let Sam Darnold go after posting the best numbers of his career because they weren’t willing to meet his financial aspirations, much less with McCarthy looking ready to go.
Then, with the Indianapolis Colts shockingly giving Daniel Jones $17 million a year, they opted not to match that offer.
Last but not least, they chose not to pursue Aaron Rodgers in spite of his alleged interest in playing for them.
All of that just means that they firmly believe that McCarthy can be their guy starting next season.
He will be back to full strength, and he had an entire year to learn the playbook and soak in as much information as possible.
Still, we’ve seen plans change over and over in this league, and while Wentz is not a starting-caliber player anymore, he’s still a high-end backup.
