Lonergan was on the quarterback depth chart this season behind starter Jalen Milroe and his primary backup, Ty Simpson. Then Lonergan and Austin Mack usually rotated.
Entering the portal would allow Lonergan a change of scenery, which benefited his former teammate and recruiting classmate Eli Holstein well at Pitt this past season.
Matt Zenitz of 247Sports/CBS was first to report the news.
Where does this leave Alabama’s quarterback situation? Milroe hasn’t yet revealed his plans for next season, but he could either enter the NFL Draft or return to college to use his remaining eligibility. ESPN has Milroe ranked as the No. 4 quarterback in the potential draft class behind Shedeur Sanders, Cam Ward and Quinn Ewers.
Simpson and Mack, a former Washington transfer, are set to return to Alabama. The Crimson Tide will also add five-star quarterback Keelon Russell, a top signee in the 2025 recruiting class.
The transfer portal opened Monday and will remain open for 20 days.
