Alabama QB coach updates progress of Ty Simpson, Keelon Russell and Austin Mack

As Alabama’s fall camp heats up, the quarterback competition in Tuscaloosa is drawing intense attention. Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ryan Grubb offered fresh insight into the progress of the Crimson Tide’s three main contenders: Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell.

Ty Simpson, the junior who has patiently waited for his moment, is currently in the lead. Grubb praised his command of the offense, smart decision-making, and ability to deliver catchable throws. Head coach Kalen DeBoer echoed that sentiment at SEC Media Days, saying that if the season started today, Simpson would be under center. “He’s consistent, he moves the chains, and he’s earned the trust of the huddle,” Grubb noted.

Austin Mack, a sophomore transfer from Washington who followed DeBoer to Alabama, has quickly adjusted to the Tide’s system. Known for his mechanics and arm strength, Mack has impressed both coaches and teammates with his poise in practice. While he lacks Simpson’s SEC experience, his growth over the offseason has kept the competition tight. “Austin’s a guy who doesn’t get rattled,” Grubb said. “He processes quickly, and that’s big in this offense.”

Keelon Russell, the highly touted freshman and Elite 11 MVP, brings raw talent and a high ceiling to the mix. Arriving on campus in January, Russell has already shown flashes of brilliance that have coaches excited about his future. His athleticism and natural playmaking ability stand out, though Grubb admits he’s still refining the mental side of the game. “Keelon’s learning every day. He’s got the tools — it’s about putting it all together,” Grubb explained.

DeBoer has made it clear that while Simpson is ahead for now, nothing is set in stone. The next few weeks of camp will be critical in determining who takes the first snap when Alabama opens against Florida State. With three talented quarterbacks pushing each other daily, the Tide’s QB room is shaping up to be one of the most competitive storylines of the 2025 season.
