A player in the Vancouver Canucks’ was in action, but in a slightly different capacity.
On Tuesday night’s episode of Amazing Race Canada, goaltender Ty Young took part in the episode.
The Canucks netminder was met with Jon Montgomery, who scored a goal in the demonstration. Then, he was tasked with awarding the goals the contestants scored before eventually handing them their next clues.
Young has been a member of the Canucks organization since the team took him in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Draft. After spending two seasons with the Prince George Cougars of the Western Hockey League, the Calgary native broke into the professional ranks with the Kalamazoo Wings, the Canucks’ secondary affiliate. In 22 games, he posted a 10-9-2 record, with a 2.53 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage and two shutouts.
His efforts earned him a couple of call-ups to the Canucks’ American League affiliates, the Abbotsford Canucks. The 20-year-old went 8-3-0 in 11 appearances, with a 2.72 GAA and .904 SV%.
Young will be heading into the second year of his three-year, entry-level contract, which he signed in September 2023. The deal has an NHL cap hit of $825,000 and a minor-league salary of $82,500 through the 2026-27 season.
The former Calgary Canuck is one of seven goaltenders signed to NHL contracts next year. With Kevin Lankinen and Thatcher Demko locked up for spots on the big club, the battle for who’ll be in Abbotsford will be interesting. With the Canucks offloading Arturs Silovs, who led the Abbotsford Canucks to the franchise’s first Calder Cup this past spring, a No. 2 position is up for grabs.
It’s expected that Nikita Tolopilo will return to Abbotsford after spending most of the season with Silovs. Jiri Patera is back on another two-way contract after playing seven games for the team last season. Along with Young, former Harvard standout Aku Koskenvuo was signed to an entry-level deal back in March.
