The New York Jets have already informed Aaron Rodgers that he will not be returning to the team in 2025. The longtime veteran is still expected to play, but where he ends up is going to take some time.
Despite Rodgers struggling with the Jets, he is still arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the league. A new prediction has the former Super Bowl champion head out west to essentially swap places with Los Angeles Rams star Matthew Stafford.
NFL insider Mike Florio believes through sources that the Rams might shock the NFL by trading Stafford to the New York Giants. A result of the trade would then lead them to target Rodgers.
"Based on recent reports and public comments and other things churning in the broader NFL rumor mill, one experienced G.M. has a prediction as to how the Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers companion mysteries will be resolved.
Step one, Stafford gets traded to the Giants.
Step two, Rodgers signs with the Rams."
Should this predicted trade shake out in this manner, it would effectively change the NFL completely.
The Giants are in desperate need of a franchise quarterback, and though Stafford is presumably in the twilight years of his career, he is still a viable franchise quarterback. Stafford could pair well with Malik Nabers and Darius Slayton to create a massively strong offensive attack.
The issue is the Giants aren't in "win now" mode after giving up Saquon Barkley, so the team would have to expect Stafford to be built around, hoping he could land the team a championship before he retires.
The other bigger issue is the Rams have also indicated they would not trade Stafford for anything less than a first-round pick. The Giants giving up a first-round pick for an aging Stafford would damage the team's ability to start rebuilding through the draft in 2025, assuming that is the first-round pick they would give up for the Rams signal caller.
On the flip side, the Rams giving up Stafford and replacing him with an older and arguable lesser option with Rodgers would put Los Angeles in a bit of a bind in terms of their attempts to return to the deeper postseason position in 2025.
The Rams have also informed Cooper Kupp that he will be traded, so adding in Rodgers would be a bit confusing.
Los Angeles does need a younger and more dynamic option at quarterback, and they could see Rodgers as a potential one-year stopgap to allow the team to find a more youthful replacement in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Either way, Rodgers going to the Rams and Stafford to the Giants would be an insane turn of events.
