A Kirk Cousins trade gamble is now an option for the Giants (and they should take it)

One major domino has yet to fall around the NFL and the New York Giants are one of the particular teams waiting on the news.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers deciding where he wants to play next is not a new story, but the Giants seem to be handcuffed to the situation. While Rodgers is making his decision, the Giants have watched as other quarterback options come off the market one by one.

If not Rodgers, then who? Is it Russell Wilson time in New York? Will the Giants get their hands on a rookie at pick no. 3 in the 2025 NFL Draft?

Kirk Cousins

Another team has, indeed, made a polarizing quarterback decision that involves keeping a veteran on the roster and, now, the Atlanta Falcons might just be in position to help the Giants out. After deciding to keep Kirk Cousins on their roster, thus triggering a guaranteed $10 million bonus for 2026, many wondered exactly what the plan was.

The Falcons are moving forward with Michael Penix Jr., but have been patient in figuring out where exactly they're going to move with Cousins. Of course, it makes sense for Cousins to get traded or released, even though the Falcons will get hit with a load of dead money.

A Kirk Cousins trade could be on the horizon, and the Giants need to pounce

NFL insider Josina Anderson has reported the Falcons are now receiving interest in a Cousins trade, presumably because of the Rodgers situation taking so long. Maybe some teams know what will happen with Rodgers and, thus, are turning their attention to Cousins.

Despite the big contract, Cousins is really just a one-year gamble. Next year, any team that has him on their roster could cut ties and save $22.5 million in doing so.

Part of Anderson's report also includes the idea that a third-round pick could be the asking price for Cousins in a deal. If that's the case, why wouldn't the Giants take the risk? It makes a lot of sense for New York, who would still have plenty of draft capital at their disposal.

New York has a first rounder (no. 3), second rounder (no. 34) and two third rounders (no. 65 and no. 99). Maybe they can get Atlanta to take their later third-round pick and toss in a 2026 fifth-round selection to push the deal over the edge.

That way, New York can still take the best player available at third overall this year, who might end up being Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter if Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders were to go first and second overall. We don't know how Sanders' draft stock is going to shake out, but Ward in the top two seems like a given at this point.

The Giants will still be able to add tremendous talent throughout this year's draft while having a serviceable starter under center. This makes all the sense in the world.

Or, would this fan base rather have Russell Wilson? it doesn't seem like Rodgers is coming to New York, so you make the call.
