The San Francisco 49ers had little trouble dispatching the Chicago Bears in Week 14, but their road to the postseason remains an unlikely one.
San Francisco hammered the Bears 38-13 to end a three-game losing streak on Sunday, yet the 49ers' hopes of making the playoffs actually worsened.
According to The Athletic's playoff simulator, the 49ers now have just a six percent chance to reach the playoffs for a fourth straight season.
That is a drop from nine percent going into Week 14, with the dip likely tied to the wins for the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams.
With the Seahawks beating the Cardinals, Seattle is now two games ahead of 6-7 San Francisco with four games to go. The Rams, meanwhile, are 7-6 having boosted their hopes with a shootout win over the Buffalo Bills.
The situation is worse for the 49ers according to The New York Times, which gives them just a three percent shot to make the playoffs.
San Francisco hosts the Rams on Thursday Night Football with a chance to move level with Los Angeles at 7-7.
Even with a win over the Rams and a Seahawks loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, a scenario that would move the Niners within a game of the division lead, San Francisco's odds would still only stand at seven percent, per the NYT.
Defeat to the Rams would drop the 49ers' chances to under one percent, effectively ending their season.
