The playoffs are coming for the Detroit Lions. We don't yet know what seed they'll be in, but we know they'll be there. The team has two spots open on their practice squad and now might be a great time to add some veteran help there with guys that they can elevate in playoff games and get some extra help.
We took a look at who's out there right now and here are three guys to keep an eye on as the Lions look to fill these spots soon:
It seems crazy that this former first-round pick is not on a roster right now. He's spent pretty much the entire season with the Jets and when he got on the field, he wasn't bad. He was able to provide some pressure and got home once too. There are not a lot of superstars waiting to be signed right now, so you have to go with the guys who can do something and the 29-year-old McKinely can.
Peterson never retired from the NFL after the Steelers parted with him last March. He's been open to having another shot to play somewhere all season and wants to win a Super Bowl. Some cornerback depth could absolutely help for the Lions and this would be a great opportunity for Peterson to give one last chase at that elusive Super Bowl. Maybe a long shot for both parties, but for a team that lost its top corner this season, it wouldn't hurt to have a guy like Peterson in a practice squad spot.
Ridgeway could be a lot like Tyson Alualu was for the Lions last year. A veteran that can come in a provide surprisingly good play out of nowhere. Ridgeway would be on a team right now had he not torn his achilles in November of last season. He should be good to go by now and might be waiting until March to find a team, but he could be a help right now for a team that needs some depth in the middle of their defensive line.
