On Saturday Fox Sports' NFL insider Jordan Shultz reported that multiple teams were interested in signing Daniel Jones after he and the Giants mutually agreed to part ways last week. The Detroit Lions were on that list. We have three reasons why Detroit is absolutely the best spot for him.
The Lions have a history of rebuilding quarterbacks
There is no doubt that this is Jared Goff's team. There's a reason it's Goff's team though and that's because this coaching staff rebuilt him from the ground up. The Rams benched Goff in 2020. He was thrown into the Stafford trade and was expected to be a bridge at best. Instead he's now an MVP candidate.
The Lions have a great team that they can put around Jones to help rebuild him. Dan Campbell, Mark Brunell, Ben Johnson, Tanner Engstrand and even Goff himself could be invaluable for Jones to get back on the right track. Then maybe the Lions have a trade chip at some point.
They need and want a premium backup
The Lions are in a position where they want to win championships. In order to do that you need to make sure that you have some contingency plans in place in case the worst happens. Jones is a great contingency plan.
Here's a guy that's been an NFL starter for a playoff team and has some real minutes on the field. You don't want him to be your forever starter, but he's good for a short stretch of just making sure the Lions stay in it.
I know Lions fans like Hendon Hooker, but he's not ready for this yet and the Lions know that he's not ready. He's still just getting used to the pro game and some decent performances in the preseason against third stringers does not just mean that he's ready to go.
The Culture
Daniel Jones is not a locker room cancer or toxic or anything like that. This is a good guy that has simply been in the wrong place. His comments after getting benched really showed what he's all about.
"I take full responsibility for my part in not bringing more wins. Nobody wanted to win more games worse than me, and I gave everything I had on the field in my preparation." Jones said "I'm 100% accountable for my part. I did not play well enough consistently enough to get the team results."
You can't tell me that's a guy that doesn't fit the culture in Detroit. A culture that's all about responsibility and being a part of something bigger than yourself. He is absolutely a Lions guy.
