It’s easy to get down if you’re someone who follows the New York Giants right now, because they’ve struggled so much for the past several years. The team was only 3-14 last season and landed at the bottom of their conference, but that’s all behind the Giants, and now, it’s onwards and upwards.
Everybody knows that one of the team’s strengths heading into the 2025-26 season is their quarterback room, which is packed and looks much different than it did in previous years. But, there are some other, more subtle aspects of the lineup that could make for a silver lining for this team. Plus, these positive aspects are pretty understated, so it may take the Giants’ competitors by surprise, which is a good thing.
The New York Giants have some players on their squad who are getting attention in the NFL, and if they perform as well as they could, that will help the team have the kind of comeback year that they so badly want and need.
2 New York Giants Players (Almost) Make Prestigious Tallies
So, we already know that the Giants’ quarterback room is stacked, with veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, rookie Jaxson Dart and the only returning quarterback from last season, Tommy DeVito. But, what about their safety and edge positions?
In a piece published on Wednesday, July 9, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler asked NFL executives, coaches and scouts to rank the top 10 edge rushers in the NFL. “In total, more than 70 voters submitted a ballot on at least one position, and in many cases all positions,” Fowler states in the piece. “Additional voting and follow-up calls with those surveyed helped us break any ties.”
While no Giants players made the top 10, Brian Burns received the first honorable mention, landing just outside of the top 10. One NFL personnel evaluator had glowing things to say about Burns, noting, “He’s still got premier ability, someone you have to account for on every snap. If this was a skill-set conversation only, he’d be top five. He’s got everything you want from that standpoint.” But, on the flipside, this evaluator added, “he just hasn’t had the consistent production.”
Another Giants Player Getting Attention
Burns isn’t the only one getting some buzz. In a piece published on Thursday, July 10, also by Josh Fowler of ESPN, a collection of NFL execs, coaches and scouts ranked the best safeties in the league. “The objective was to identify the best players for 2025,” Fowler stated. “This was not a five-year projection or a career achievement award.”
While the Giants also fell outside the top 10 for this ranking, another star player got an honorable mention, and that’s Jevon Holland. As with Burns, Holland was included just outside the top 10 on the tally.
Of Holland, a personnel director in the NFL stated, “I still love the skill set, but he drastically regressed last year, which was shocking to see from a young player in a contract year.” So, it’s a mix of the good and the bad, but let’s hope for more of the former this season.
