The Kansas City Chiefs successfully defended their Super Bowl title in the 2023 season despite a mediocre wide receiving room. In fact, it was tight end Travis Kelce, who led the team in receiving yards in the 2023 NFL campaign. To be fair, that was also the case in 2022 when Kelce paced the team in the same statistical department.
The Chiefs made a move in the offseason to shore up the position when they signed Marquise “Hollywood” Brown to a one-year deal worth $7 million. For Tom Blair of NFL.com, Brown is the Chiefs player to root for in the coming season.
I’m happy for any receiver who gets the chance to work with Patrick Mahomes. Yes, Brown is kind of spoiled in this department, having previously caught passes from Lamar Jackson in Baltimore and Kyler Murray in Arizona. But as my colleague Kevin Patra recently pointed out, Brown wasn’t put in the best position by either the Ravens or the Cardinals. The Chiefs present a golden opportunity for Brown to earn himself a long-term contract somewhere — maybe even in Kanas City, if he can become a consistent, reliable and productive partner for Mahomes. And, frankly, I’m in favor of anything that helps Mahomes spin more magic on the field.
Kansas City Chiefs new wide receiver could have a big 2024 ahead
Before inking a short-term deal with the Chiefs, Brown played three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and two more with the Arizona Cardinals. Now, he will look to become a major part of the Chiefs’ passing attack that will once again be led by no other than two-time league Most Valuable Player and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Last season, the Chiefs ranked sixth in the league with 248.6 passing yards per game, largely thanks to the excellence of Mahomes under center.
Brown will look to give his stock a boost by capitalizing on the chance of playing alongside a future Hall of Famer like Mahomes. In 2023, Brown only had 5474 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 51 receptions and 101 targets.
